**HydroGeoDay Botswana 2025 – A Resounding Success!**\
On **March 21st, 2025**, the second edition of **HydroGeoDay Botswana** was celebrated under the theme:\
**“Groundwater Guardians: Protecting Our Invisible Resources.”**\
The event took place at the **culturally rich Lecheng Natural Water Springs** in the Central District.
**Organized by:**\
_Ms. Phatsimo J. Obuseng_ & _Ms. Tshenolo L. Chaba_
This year’s event brought together scientists, students, traditional leaders, elders, and stakeholders for a powerful day of **scientific exchange, cultural storytelling, and community education**
**scientific exchange**
- **Dr. Ame T. Selepeng** (BIUST) presented research on 13 natural springs in the Tswapong Hills, revealing low anion and cation concentrations—signs of clean, minimally impacted water.
- **Dr. Olaotse Osenyeng** (Aqualogic) emphasized sustainable groundwater abstraction and highlighted contamination risks from mining, agriculture, and industry.
**Cultural & Historical Insights**
Traditional leaders **Kgosi Joseph Makwati, Kgosi Dimpe, Kgosi Sefhako, and Kgosi George** guided a sacred tour to **Lecha**, a revered water pan.\
Elders shared oral histories, teaching that water collection from Lecha was once restricted in the late afternoons out of reverence for ancestral spirits (_Badimo_). The rich storytelling highlighted the origins of Lecheng village and its deep-rooted relationship with water.
👧🏾👦🏽 **Youth Involvement & Education**
Students from **BIUST, Kgaswe International School, Royal High School, @Elyte International School, Lotsane SSS, Mokgalo JSS**, and **Lecheng Primary** showcased their passion for groundwater through a vibrant **quiz competition**.
🙌🏽 **Acknowledgments**
Gratitude goes to all who supported the event, including:\
**Aqualogic**, **Water Utilities Corporation**, **Lecheng Heritage Sites**, **Botswana International University of Science & Technology (BIUST)**, **Save the Earth Pty Ltd**, **Lecheng & Malaka Trusts**, and **local farmers**.
Together, we successfully bridged **scientific knowledge and indigenous wisdom**—laying the foundation for a future of **community-led conservation**.
We look forward to **HydroGeoDay 2026**—with a vision that goes **beyond awareness into action**.
